This model was discontinued in 2005 because there's defect in the circuitry.
We weren't aware of this when we bought it. if there had been a fire this alarm wouldn't have sounded.
On 4 July, 2016 this alarm sounded the only one of six we have in our house this one was in our Family room. we silenced it and looked around and smelled around. then it sounded again. I silenced it again. then got the one from the kitchen it very expensive one that calls the fire department if it smells the right smells that indicates a working or smoldering fire. I turned it in test mode so that it wouldn't call the fire department and hung it next to the one in question. this alarm never sounded while the First Alert sounded multiple times within 10 minutes.
Then the silence button stopped working it was Beep....Beep....Beep like this for 15 minutes while i got the phone number off the back of it which was so small I had to use a magnifying glass to see it.
Then i put the alarm in the closet but it was still to loud. so i put it in the freezer. that made it quite enough to talk on the phone. When i got them on the phone they wanted me to give them the manufacture code which could be in one of four places on the alarm. so i pulled it out of the freezer and fund the numbers she asked for. put it back in the freezer. and gave her the numbers. her first question after i gave her the numbers was: where did you buy this? I said Walmart. she said those arseholes they were supposed to return their full stock of these alarms back in 2008. she said i am very sorry Walmart sold this alarm to you, they know its defective if your family had died in a fire it would have been Walmart's fault there was a world wide recall.
She then said we will give your a full refund times 5 plus another alarm that works.
i gave her our name, phone number and address. she said usually we send refunds out normal postal service. but i will order this to be shipped out overnight FedEx you should get it in the morning.
Like she said FedEx was ringing our door bell at 8:47 AM. what freaked me out they sent cash money it was sealed in an envelope, not a check or money order, real Canadian cash money in the amount of $199.80 the alarm cost $39.96 This told me First Alert is a product you can trust, the company stands behind their product.
Old Alarm
The pulled tab was to deactivate the alarm
New Alarm
The new alarm is also a 10 year battery they only removed the text so it wouldn't look as ugly
the model of the new one is SA380 it also sees smoke and smells for chemicals the older one didn't.
